Mayrig means “mother” in Armenian, and this is a show about where we come from — and what we carry. A deeply personal, intimate 60-minute program created by cellist Karen Ouzounian and composer Lembit Beecher for cello with electronics, piano, and vocals, Mayrig weaves together the voices of Karen's mother and grandmother with original arrangements of Armenian music from her family's former home of Anatolia, songs and stories from their post-genocide home in Lebanon, and the beloved music of Charles Aznavour. New compositions by Beecher, Layale Chaker, Nathalie Joachim, and Niloufar Nourbakhsh expand on themes of generational transmission, rootedness and uprootedness — music teeming with passion and celebration, resilience and rage. The program opens and closes with Marin Marais's Les Voix Humaines, music from hundreds of years ago offering a window into the present. Ouzounian is sought after for her “radiant" performances full of “tremendous heart” and has long been a Silkroad Ensemble member and a Noe Music collaborator. This is her most personal work yet.
