Co-led by Malian balafon maestro Balla Kouyaté and Grammy-winning cellist Mike Block — both Silkroad Ensemble veterans — Djékady puts West African tradition and American music into an exhilarating, genre-defying conversation. Djékady is a Mandinka phrase meaning "coming together is good" — and this six-piece band makes that philosophy audible in every measure. Three West African musicians and three Americans share the stage — an arrangement that is less a fusion than a genuine conversation, expansive enough that, as Block puts it, "on stage, we stretch way beyond what happens in rehearsal. It's always wild and revelatory." Expect irresistible grooves, virtuosic balafon, and music that makes the whole room want to move.
